Obituary

Mrs. Yvonne Natalie Ivanochko (née Prosymiak) passed away quietly on October 4th, 2021 at the Ivan Franko Long Term Care Home in Toronto, Ontario. Yvonne was born in Toronto on August 23rd, 1933 to Hnat and Sophie (née Boychuk). She married Ihor Zenon Ivanochko on October 25th, 1958,  and together they raised three daughters.

Yvonne, or Ivanka as she was known to friends, was a compelling woman, who loved being social. It was very important to her to make a life for herself, and she took a great deal of pride in entering the workforce after raising three children. She was a very proud member of St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral and the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada. She volunteered for decades at her beloved Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch serving as President for many years. She loved musicals, Chinese food and watching the family dogs play. Sunflowers were her favourite flower.

Anyone who knew her well understood how strong willed and forceful she could be, but in recent years this aspect of her softened, and more of her tenderness emerged with her loved ones. She had become more fragile over the past year after catching COVID in May 2020. The family is very grateful to the incredible staff and administrators at the Ivan Franko Homes for taking such good and gentle care of both of their parents.

Yvonne was pre-deceased in January by her husband Ihor, and is survived by her children Daria (John), Tamara (Ron) and Sasha, her grandchildren Danton (Victoria), Julian (Leora) and Ivanka, and her great-granddaughter Rosalind.

While Yvonne’s family grieves her loss, they are choosing to remember Yvonne in a way that honours her spirit. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you consider donating to Ivan Franko Homes (ivanfrankohomes.com) or the Ukrainian Museum of Canada, Ontario Branch (umcontario.com).

Her funeral will take place at the All Saints of Ukraine Chapel Oakville on Monday, October 18th at 12:00pm.  With COVID restrictions, in-person attendance will be limited but the funeral service will be live-streamed.  For live-stream login information, please email [email protected].
